Bible Reading Plan

Redemptive-Historical Bible Reading Plan

This year we are doing a 16 part plan that reveals God's plan of redemption in the Old Testament. Here is what the organizer says about it:

"I have outlined redemptive history in 16 stages, from creation up through the open-ended expectation of the Day of the Lord. Then I provide carefully curated sections from the OT that trace this history. I tried to pick at least one chapter from every OT book, but to keep it reasonably short I had to leave some out. I also pepper in psalms along the way. Then, for each stage, I provide a chapters from the NT that bring out how each of those steps of redemptive history (for ancient Israel) are fulfilled in the new era in Christ." Greg Laniers Blog

We will have three to four weeks to read and reflect on each part.

We will reflect on PART 3 for one more week.

Come discuss this plan together in our FORUM. See you there!

Costa Rica youth ministry experiences awakening through board games

The youth ministry of the Church of the Nazarene in Rositer Carballo, Costa Rica, is experiencing significant growth since adding a new ministry.

After a challenging year for the church’s youth ministry in 2021, the pastor and some church leaders felt the need to restart the ministry in 2022. So, without a youth president, they began to meet on Friday nights to play board games and share a snack.

Initially, two or three young men arrived. After some time, Justin, 23, took the challenge of leading the group, made several changes that would allow him to function better, and worked on forming a team of people to work with him. One of the changes was to include biblical teachings in the meetings.

Justin said this change was prompted by an 18-year-old newcomer who asked if, in addition to having regular activities, the leaders could also share a biblical message with attendees.

Currently, about 11 people are part of the youth ministry team, and about 65 young people meet every Friday.

"Worship is different now, with different activities including God's message," Justin said.

The lives of many young people are being transformed through these gatherings. Mabelyn, a young woman who attends the meetings, said that a friend invited her and during the time of worship, she felt that God spoke to her.

"I felt like God spoke to me," Mabelyn said. "He hugged me and said, 'daughter, I had waited for you for quite some time. Never again will you feel that you are alone. I have always been with you, and I will continue to be with you.' At that moment, I felt peace, strength, joy, and tranquility. That day was one of the best in my life because I felt like I was never alone. God was always with me."

Currently, Mabelyn serves as part of the youth ministry support team. She said the youth group helped her discover her talents and that she has seen God's hand at work in her life and in the lives of the young people attending.

Nicole Viviana, another of the young assistants, said that she lived believing her life would be perfect without God. But one night, God spoke to her.

"That same night, I wrote to my cousin, we talked, and he invited me to the meeting of young people," Viviana said. "Since then, I have been following Christ for one year now."

Humor... Kind of

Oil

Two old friends met one day after many years. One attended college, and now was very successful. The other had not attended college and never had much ambition.

The successful one said, "How has everything been going with you?"

"Well, one day I opened the Bible at random, and dropped my finger on a word and it was oil. So, I invested in oil, and boy, did the oil wells gush. Then another day I dropped my finger on another word and it was gold. So, I invested in gold and those mines really produced. Now, I'm as rich as Rockefeller."

The successful friend was so impressed that he rushed to his hotel, grabbed a Gideon Bible, flipped it open, and dropped his finger on a page.

He opened his eyes and his finger rested on the words, "Chapter Eleven."

Golf during church

The Pastor woke up Sunday morning and realizing it was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided he just had to play golf. So.... he told the associate pastor that he was feeling sick and convinced him to preach for him that day. As soon as the associate pastor left the room, the Pastor headed out of town to a golf course about forty miles away. This way he knew he wouldn't accidentally meet anyone he knew from his church.

Setting up on the first tee, he was alone. After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church! At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while looking down from heaven and exclaimed,

"You're not going to let him get away with this, are you?" The Lord sighed, and said, "No, I guess not."Just then he hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole. IT WAS A 435 YARD HOLE IN ONE! Saint Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and asked,

"Why did you let him do that?"The Lord smiled and replied,

"Who's he going to tell?"

The chocolate chip cookies

An elderly man lay dying in his bed, Suddenly death's agony was pushed aside as he smelled the aroma of his favorite homemade chocolate chip cookies wafting up the stairs.

Gathering his remaining strength, he lifted himself up from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with intense concentration, supported himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands. In labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing wide-eyed into the kitchen.

There, spread out on the kitchen table were literally HUNDREDS of his favorite chocolate chip cookies!

Was it heaven? Or, was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?

Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture, one hand on the edge of the table. The aged and withered hand quiveringly made its way to a cookie near the edge of the table; feeling the warm soft dough actually made the pain of his bones subside for a moment. His parched lips parted; the wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth; seemingly bringing him back to life.

What, then, was this sudden stinging that caused his hand to recoil?

He looked to see his wife, still holding the spatula she had just used to smack his hand.

"Stay out of those!" she said, "they're for the funeral."
